A criminal probe has been opened
after a bike train was found on a rail line in Veneto Thursday
after a complaint by Ferrovie dello Stato (FS) rail company that
deliberate sabotage may have been behind a long spate of faults
leading to major disruption and spurring calls for Transport
Minister Matteo Salvini to resign.
A rubber-coated chain for locking bicycles was hung by unknown
persons on the railway power line in the Montagnana station near
Padua.
FS told ANSA that the chain could have caused major damage.
"The metal object placed on the power line at the Montagnana
station last Thursday could have caused significant damage to
the pantograph and the power line, causing the interruption of
rail traffic and inevitable inconvenience for passengers," it
said. "Thanks to the timely intervention of the Ferrovie
technicians, the object was promptly removed and reported to the
competent authorities".
Salvini is resisting the quit calls and Minister fro Relations
with Parliament Luca Ciriani told parliament Thursday that
recent delays that have beset commuters and students were in
line with previous years.
Some of the recent faults to lines have remained mysterious.
FS filed a complaint with police after what if called "the
umpteenth odd incident".
