Italian Left (SI) leader Nicola
Fratoianni and Green Europe co-spokesman Angelo Bonelli, Green
and Left Alliance (AVS) MPs, told a press conference on
Wednesday that they wanted to know whether they were spied on by
the government through the Paragon Solutions' 'Graphite'
military-grade hacking software allegedly used to target Luca
Casarini, an NGO chief they have met on several occasions.
Fratoianni and Bonelli said they met Casarini, the founder and
mission chief of migrant-rescue NGO Mediterranea Saving humans,
several times and asked the government to know whether they have
been spied on through the technology allegedly used to hack
Casarini's phone.
The NGO said on Wednesday that Casarini had been spied on by a
yet-unidentified entity since February 2024, after an analysis
conducted by The Citizen Lab, a research team from the
University of Toronto.
Earlier this month, the NGO's legal team, represented by
attorneys Fabio Lanfranca and Serena Romano said they had filed
a legal complaint in Palermo asking authorities to investigate
who allegedly ordered to spy on the phone of the organization's
founder through the suspected use of Paragon Solutions'
'Graphite' hacking software, which is reportedly only sold by
the Israeli company to state entities.
