Deputy Premier and Foreign Minister
Antonio Tajani said Tuesday that a French court's decision to
convict Marine Le Pen over the illegal use of European
Parliament funds and ban the leader of the parliamentary party
of the right-wing National Rally (RN) group from running for
office for five years was nothing to do with the EU.
On Monday Tajani's fellow deputy premier, Transport Minister and
League leader Matteo Salvini, said that Brussels has declared
war on Le Pen after the sentence was announced.
"I believe everyone is innocent until the third degree of
judgment, the final conviction," said Tajani, the leader of the
centre-right Forza Italia party.
"Mrs. Le Pen is also innocent, as far as I'm concerned.
"I have some doubts about the electronic bracelet," he added,
referring to the way Le Pen will serve her four-year prison term
"She is not a dangerous person who could escape. It seems
strange to me.
"In any case, it is a sentence of the French justice system and
Europe has nothing to do with it".
