Italy was among countries with the
oldest population in the European Union at the beginning of
2024, Eurostat said on Friday.
The average age of the EU population was 44.7 years, with an
increase of 2.2 years since 2014.
The average age in Europe varied from the 39.4 years registered
in Ireland to the 48.7 recorded in Italy, the European
statistics institute said.
Increases were recorded in all EU countries, with the exception
of Malta (-0.7 years) and Germany (-0.1).
The population's aging was more pronounced in Greece, Italy,
Portugal and Slovakia with an average increase of 4 years.
The median age in Cyprus, Spain and Poland increased by 3.8
years.
