A rostrum, or ancient Roman ramming
beak, has been found off the Aegadian Islands in Sicily, site of
the 241BC Battle of the Aegates, a crushing sea victory over the
Carthaginians that marked the end of the First Punic War.
The bronze artefact was found on the seabed at a depth of around
80 metres.
It is just the latest in a trove of finds from the epic battle.
