On his mission to The Bahamas, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Giorgio Silli was received in Nassau by Education, Science and Technology Minister Glenys Hanna Martin, acting Chancellor Frederick Mitchell, and by Bahamian Foreign Ministry Secretary General Jerusa Lea Ali.
During the talks held in the Bahamian ministry, Silli remarked on the attention with which Italy views the states of the Caribbean Community, congratulating the excellent level of bilateral cooperation between Rome and Nassau and at the level of the United Nations and the Organisation of American States (OAS) on issues of great relevance such as the fight against climate change and transnational organised crime.
Possible collaborations in educational and academic cooperation were explored in the Bahamas Foreign Ministry, while regional topics included the crises in Haiti and the political situation in the Central American region.
The importance of legal cooperation and Italian and European programmes for the Bahamas and Caribbean countries were instead addressed during a conversation with the Minister for Security, Wayne Munroe.
Undersecretary Silli later met with the Secretary General of the Bahamian Ministry of Tourism, Latia Duncombe, with whom he discussed possible collaborations in the tourism investment sector by Italian companies.
"During my official visit to The Bahamas I had the opportunity to strengthen the bilateral ties between our countries," said Silli, "promoting cooperation in key sectors such as trade, tourism, environmental sustainability, legal cooperation, academic cooperation and the fight against organised crime.
"The Bahamas," the undersecretary added, "is a strategic partner in the Caribbean region and together we can address global challenges such as climate change and sustainable economic growth.
