On the occasion of the 10th International Women in Science Day, established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2015 to promote full and equal access of girls and women to the Stem fields, the Italian Embassy in Ottawa organised a meeting in collaboration with WiSDA, Association of Women in Science Diplomacy, founded in Washington D.C. in 2023 by the Women Science Officers of Italy, France and Germany.
WiSDA aims to promote the coordination and exchange of experiences between girls and women active in scientific fields. The meeting, opened by the Italian Ambassador to Canada, Alessandro Cattaneo, was attended by Italian and Canadian female researchers, who shared their experiences in the scientific field and discussed the importance of gender equality in the Stem sector. This was followed by the screening of a video message by the Canadian Prime Minister's scientific advisor, Mona Nemer, and the launch of the new Canadian branch of the WiSDA Association, based in Ottawa.
The initiative underlines the special attention paid by the Embassy, the Italian Consular Network and the Italian Cultural Institutes in Canada to the female dimension and to issues related to inclusiveness and women empowerment, on which Italy and Canada share a common sensitivity. Of particular note in recent days was the presence of the Canadian Nobel Prize winner for Physics, Donna Strickland, as a special guest at the launch of the exhibition on Galileo Galilei hosted by the Perimeter Institute in Waterloo (Ontario) and the 'Buone Nuove' exhibition dedicated to Italian architects from the golden age of design hosted at the UQAM University in Montréal, in collaboration with MAXXI in Rome.
