The Italian government has renewed its commitment to the one million Rohingya refugees living in Bangladesh. With a contribution of EUR 3 million, Italy will support the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) and the UN World Food Programme (WFP) to ensure the continuation of the humanitarian assistance needed in the refugee camps.
One million euro will be earmarked for UNHCR protection operations, ensuring access to essential services such as registration, accommodation, health care, water and sanitation.
The other two million euros will enable the Wfp to provide life-saving food assistance to refugees.
"Both initiatives confirm Italy's commitment to the Rohingya refugee population in Bangladesh, as also emphasised by Foreign Undersecretary Maria Tripodi during her recently concluded mission to Dhaka," said Antonio Alessandro, Italy's ambassador to Bangladesh.
With limited livelihood opportunities, the Rohingya refugees depend on humanitarian assistance for their survival and the issue of funding remains a crucial challenge.
"Italy's contributions to UNHCR and Wfp to support the Rohingya refugees in the Cox's Bazar camps demonstrate our strong commitment to responding to the needs of one of the world's most vulnerable populations, underscoring the importance of international cooperation in managing complex crises," said Margherita Lulli, head of the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation's foreign office in Hanoi, responsible for Southeast Asia.
Unhcr, Wfp and their partners, together with the Government of Bangladesh, are preparing for the launch of the Joint Response Plan 2025, which will outline the humanitarian needs of Rohingya refugees and host communities.
