On the occasion of the Italian Design Day 2025, the exhibition 'Buone Nuove - Donne architette del cambiamento' (Good New Women Architects of Change) was inaugurated at the Design Centre of the University of Quebec in Montréal (Uqam). The pre-vernissage, organised by the Consulate General of Italy in Montreal and the Italian Cultural Institute in Montreal, was attended by the Ambassador of Italy in Canada, Alessandro Cattaneo, the Consul General of Italy in Montreal, Enrico Pavone, the Rector of Uqam, Stephane Pallage, the curators and a large audience of designers, architects, entrepreneurs and members of the consular corps.
In his opening speech, the Ambassador of Italy to Canada, Alessandro Cattaneo, explained how the exhibition invites an important reflection on the extraordinary contribution of women to post-war Italian architecture, highlighting highly prestigious figures such as Cini Boeri, Anna Castelli Ferrieri, Gae Aulenti, Franca Helg and Nanda Vigo.
With their modern and innovative visions, these architects opened up the sector to new perspectives. Ambassador Cattaneo also recalled the close cooperation between Italy and Canada in this field, as demonstrated by the realisation of emblematic architectural works in Canada by Italian architects, including the Montreal Stock Exchange Tower designed by Luigi Moretti and Pier Luigi Nervi and the new Ontario Court of Justice Building designed by Renzo Piano.
The exhibition, the result of a collaboration between the Maxxi Museum in Rome, the Uqam Design Centre and the Italian Cultural Institute in Montreal, aims to document how the contribution of women in recent decades has given new strength to contemporary architecture. The exhibition will be open until 6 April and includes a section specifically dedicated to the contribution of Quebec women professionals.
