the Governor of Rio Grande do Sul, Eduardo Leite, received the Consul General of Italy in Porto Alegre, Valerio Caruso, at the Piratini Palace. The meeting focused on the celebrations for the 150th anniversary of Italian immigration in Rio Grande do Sul and was attended by several local authorities.
During the meeting, Caruso illustrated the calendar of festivities planned by the Consulate in the coming months, emphasising the importance of the Governor's presence at important events, such as the Wine South America Fair, scheduled for 6 May, which will be attended by the Italian Ambassador Alessandro Cortese and representatives of the Veneto Region, and Republic Day, on 2 June.
"The Governor's presence will be a source of great pride for the Italian community, whose more than 100-year-old culture is a cornerstone of the Gaúcha identity," Caruso said.
Another topic discussed was the proposal for a direct flight between Porto Alegre and Rome, supported by the Italian Chamber of Commerce of Rio Grande do Sul. The vice-president of the Chamber, Neco Argenta, present at the meeting, expressed his full support for the initiative. Leite was enthusiastic, highlighting how a direct air route could stimulate several sectors of the local economy. 'We are ready to work on this project. Count on me,' he said.
The meeting was also attended by representatives of the state executive and legislature. The Committee of Italians Abroad (Comites-RS) was represented by President Cristina Mioranza, and the General Council of Italians Abroad (CGIE) by Councillor Stephania Puton.
