The late three-time ex-premier Silvio
Berlusconi's centre-right Forza Italia (FI) party on Saturday
called for Italy to return to nuclear power after abandoning it
following the 1986 Chernobyl disaster in order to help guarantee
the country's energy independence.
"Our country's energy independence is indispensable to guarantee
stable growth and prosperity and to avoid Italy having to submit
to the market dictated by producer countries, which has never
been so penalising as in recent years," said FI House Whip Paolo
Barelli.
"The production of 'natural' energy that mother nature can give
us - photovoltaic, wind, biomass - should certainly be
valorised, but Forza Italia has always indicated that the
primary energy source - which can guarantee our country full
autonomy - is nuclear energy".
