Former France, Real Madrid and
Manchester United defender Raphael Varane said Wednesday that he
was retiring from football after suffering a knee injury in the
summer but would stay with Italian club Como in an off-the-field
role.
The 31-year-old joined the promoted Serie A in the closed season
but played only 20 minutes for them in an Italian Cup tie
against Sampdoria.
"They say that all good things must come to an end," Varane, who
won the 2018 World Cup and four Champions League titles, said on
social media.
"A new life begins off the pitch.
"I will remain with Como. Just without using my boots and shin
pads".
Cesc Fabragas' Como came from behind to win 3-2 at Atalanta on
Tuesday and secure their first win of the season in Serie A.
