In Serbia, where a massive
anti-government protest movement led by students has been going
on for five months, President Aleksandar Vucic today began
consultations with political forces in view of the formation of
a new government, following the resignation of Prime Minister
Milos Vucevic on 28 January under pressure from popular
protests, and in the aftermath of serious incidents in Novi Sad,
the northern city that was the site of the collapse at the
station that caused Representatives from the Russian, Hungarian,
Bosnian Muslim, and Croatian minorities were the first to meet
Vucic, followed by a small moderate opposition group. The main
forces of the radical opposition have stated that they do not
wish to participate in these consultations, remaining firm in
their demand for a transitional technical government that will
lead the country to elections, a hypothesis categorically
rejected by Vucic and his majority party, SNS.
