A sentence issued late Tuesday by the
tribunal of Cosenza that convicted Isabella Internò for the 1989
murder of her former fiancée, Cosenza midfielder Donato
Bergamini, sentencing her to 16 years in jail, has not concluded
the judicial case.
The judges in fact have decided to forward to the State
attorney's office in the Calabrian city of Castrovillari the
court papers regarding the defendant's cousin, Roberto Inernò,
to evaluate whether he played a role in the murder.
Roberto is the brother of Dino Pippo who was also under
investigation for Bergamini's death before the case against him
was shelved.
According to prosecutors who investigated the case, Bergamini's
murder was planned within the "patriarchal context" of Internò's
family after Bergamini did not marry her, as she would have
desired, after she got pregnant in 1987 at the age of 20.
Magistrates, according to court papers, believe Internò acted
"according ti the will of people who are being identified".
Prosecutor Luca Primicerio said Bergamini wanted to keep their
baby but "would never have wanted to marry her due to her
obsessive character".
Internò had an abortion and the pair broke up.
Bergamini was found dead on November 18, 1989, along a state
road near Roseto Capo Spulico, Cosenza.
