Italy's cancer survival rates are the
best in Europe, a study said Friday.
In ten years (2011-2021), cancer deaths in Italy have decreased
by 15%, a better percentage than the European Union, where the
decrease stopped at 12%, said the Italian Society of Medical
Oncology (AIOM) in a report in collaboration with the American
Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO).
Even in the United States, overall cancer mortality has
decreased by 34% from 1991 to 2022, with approximately 4.5
million deaths avoided, while there were over 268 thousand in
Italy between 2007 and 2019.
Furthermore, if the United States is at the top of world cancer
research, Italy is in the 'top five' of the oncology studies
ranking.
But Italy must define new models, speeding up the start-up times
of trials and eliminating bureaucratic obstacles, in order not
to be left behind and keep up, said AIOM.
