The construction site for the renovation of the 'Casa d'Italia', which will house the offices of the Consulate General, the Institute of Culture, the Italian State Schools and the Comites, has been opened in Zurich.
The 'Casa d'Italia' - a historic 3,000 square metre building dating back to 1919 - will also have a large and modern auditorium for the organisation of cultural events, according to a press release issued by the Consulate. The delivery of the new building - which will be equipped with the latest technologies for energy saving and environmental sustainability - is scheduled for the first half of 2026.
At the opening of the building site - which took place in the presence of the Head of the Administrative and Technical Coordination Unit of the Farnesina, Min. Plen. Giulio Alaimo, the city authorities and representatives of the Italian community - the Italian Ambassador to Switzerland, Gian Lorenzo Cornado expressed his satisfaction with the opening of the construction site.
"I am really happy," said Ambassador Cornado, "today the work begins and the moment is approaching when the Schools, the Consulate General and the Italian community will be able to have their own House".
Alaimo recalled that the Casa d'Italia in Zurich - worth about €14 million - is one of the Farnesina's major investments abroad as part of the strategy to modernise and enhance the state property.
For his part, the Consul General in Zurich, Mario Baldi, emphasised the goal of celebrating Republic Day 2026 in the new Casa d'Italia: "It will be the home of all Italians, modern, elegant and functional; I am proud to make it accessible to the Italian community, associations, Consulate General users and the students of our schools".
The renovation work will be carried out by the Pizzarotti Construction Company based on a project by the "Corvino & Multari" Architecture Studio.
