Bad weather on Friday pummelled
Tuscany and Emilia-Romagna as several rivers in the two regions
were above alert level for torrential rain and flooding.
In Tuscany, where schools remained closed in several cities
including Florence amid an orange weather alert, heavy rain
overnight peltered in particular the Mugello area north of the
Tuscan city.
Rivers were above 'alert level 1', in particular the Arno in
Florence, as well as in the nearby towns of Bagno a Ripoli,
Lastra a Signa and Montelupo, Tuscany Governor Eugenio Giani
wrote on Telegram on Friday morning.
The Arno was instead below 'alert level 1' in Empoli, Fucecchio,
Pontedera and Pisa.
The weather was expected to worsen on Friday morning until the
afternoon with "intense and persistent rain along a line
extending from the province of Livorno" on the coast towards
"the provinces of Pistoia, Florence, Prato, Arezzo and again
Pistoia", wrote Giani.
Heavy rain also pummelled the Emilia-Romagna region, in
particular Forlì, Ravenna, Bologna and Ferrara with rivers above
alert levels, such as the "Senio, Lamone and Santerno" in the
Appennine areas, the official weather website Emilia-Romagna
Meteo reported on Facebook.
On Thursday night, local authorities in Bologna ordered the
evacuation of ground floor rooms from 10 pm amid the weather red
alert for torrential rain and flooding.
Following the alert issued by environmental agency Arpae, the
Municipality of Bologna issued an order to evacuate the
basements, semi-basements and ground floors of buildings located
in some streets in the Borgo Panigale-Reno, Navile,
Porto-Saragozza, Santo Stefano and Savena neighborhoods starting
from 10 pm today and until the end of the emergency.
