On 16 January, in the city of Bento Gonçalves, Deputy Governor Gabriel Souza and Consul General of Italy in Porto Alegre Valerio Caruso inaugurated the celebrations for the 150th anniversary of Italian immigration in the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul.
At the ceremony, attended by governmental and legislative authorities and representatives of the Italian community, the official calendar of events for 2025 was presented, together with the dedicated internet portal and the official logo of the celebrations.
In his speech, the Consul General emphasised the symbolic value of the anniversary, which celebrates Italian culture in a state where 40% of the population has Italian origins, and highlighted the importance of the initiatives to stimulate economic recovery after last May's floods.
Deputy Governor Souza thanked the Consul for his work, recalling the historic visit of the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella to Porto Alegre, a moment of solidarity and strengthening of ties between Italy and Rio Grande do Sul, which opens new prospects for bilateral cooperation.
